2-Ethyl-1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid hydrochloride is a glutathione precursor that has been shown to increase intracellular glutathione levels in the intestinal cells of rats. It also inhibits xenobiotic aldehydes from causing cytotoxicity by combining with reactive oxygen species and converting them into less toxic metabolites. 2-Ethyl-1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid hydrochloride is metabolized by eukaryotic cells and functions as an intermediate in the synthesis of l-cysteine.
