Ethyl (quinolin-8-yloxy)acetate is an antibacterial agent that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. It has significant activity against a number of bacterial strains, including subtilis and staphylococcus isolates. The molecule also inhibits fungal growth by binding to the enzyme DNA gyrase. Ethyl (quinolin-8-yloxy)acetate is a member of the pyrazole family and can be synthesized using chloride as a reagent in a reaction time of 30 minutes at room temperature. This compound reacts with thionyl chloride to form ethyl (2-chloroquinolin-8-yloxy)acetate, which reacts with ethanethiol in the presence of base to produce ethyl (quinolin-8-yloxy)acetate. In this process, dihedral angles must be taken into account because they are important for determining the stereochemistry of this reaction.
