Ethyl 2-aminobutanoate hydrochloride is a diastereoisomeric cyclic compound with a hydride group at the alpha position. It has been synthesized by reduction of ethyl acetoacetate with lithium aluminum hydride and subsequent alkylation with butyl amine. The reaction is stereospecific, giving the erythro diastereoisomer in 100% yield. This compound can be used as an intermediate for the synthesis of various other compounds, including ketones, alcohols, and acylated compounds. In addition to its use as an intermediate, it may also be used for spectroscopy experiments in organic chemistry because of its optically active nature.
