Ethyl 3-oxoquinuclidine-2-carboxylate is a nonpolar, nucleophilic compound that has the ability to react with alkylating agents. It can be used as a methylating agent, and it can also be used to prepare new compounds by alkylation reactions. The solubility of ethyl 3-oxoquinuclidine-2-carboxylate in water is very low, and it is best dissolved in formamide or dioxane. The activation energy for the reaction of this compound with methyl isocyanate is about 34 kJ/mol. The nmr spectrum of this compound shows two major peaks at 2.8 ppm and 4.4 ppm, which represent the protonated amine and the tautomeric equilibrium between the amine and imine forms respectively.
