Ethyl 2-acetylisonicotinate is a supramolecular ligand that binds to iron ions (Fe(II)) and can be used in the synthesis of coordination complexes. It has been shown to bind to transition metals, such as iron, with high affinity and specificity. This ligand also binds to amines and carboxylates and can be used as a functionalizing agent for polymers. Ethyl 2-acetylisonicotinate can be synthesized by reacting acetylene with ethyl chloroformate in the presence of a base.
