3-Ethyl-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methylthiazoliumbromide (ETMT) is a thiophilic, stereoisomeric chemical that has been shown to be an effective antiulcer agent. ETMT inhibits the production of stomach acid by inhibiting the enzyme mercaptan, which is responsible for the conversion of amino acids into mercaptans. Studies have shown that ETMT's antipsychotic properties are due to its ability to inhibit dopamine release and antagonize dopamine receptors. It has also been shown to have antiulcer activity against cysteamine and cyclopentane, as well as other thiophilic and geometrical compounds.
