Ethyl 3-oxopyrrolidine-1-carboxylate is a metabolite of ethyl pyrrolidin-2-carboxylate. The compound is a primary amine and it can be detected by spectrometric means. It has been used as an analog to study the metabolism of methyl pyrrolidin-2-carboxylate in vivo and in vitro. Ethyl 3-oxopyrrolidine-1-carboxylate can be oxidized to form pentafluorophenol by some oxidases, such as cytochrome P450. This oxidation reaction also produces isoquinolyl (isoquinoline) as a byproduct. Methanolysis of this compound produces homophthalic acid, which can be analyzed by mass spectrometry or MALDI TOF MS (matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry).
