Ethyl 2-(methylamino)benzoate is an inorganic base that has antibacterial activity. It is a derivative of benzoic acid and has a cavity that can bind to the amino group of an amino acid. This binding inhibits bacterial growth by preventing the production of proteins vital for cell division and metabolism. Ethyl 2-(methylamino)benzoate also has antimicrobial peptide activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit fatty acid ester synthesis, leading to decreased fatty acid production and cell membrane integrity. This active form also inhibits chondroitin sulfate synthesis and alginic acid synthesis, which are important components of the bacterial cell wall. The inhibition of these two processes leads to bacterial death by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
