N-Ethylbenzimidazole is a benzimidazole derivative that inhibits the enzyme non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase. It is an inhibitor of HIV, which is the virus that causes AIDS. N-Ethylbenzimidazole has been shown to inhibit the growth of malonic acid and fatty acids in vitro. This agent also has anti-inflammatory effects, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. N-Ethylbenzimidazole has been used for the treatment of congestive heart disease and for diagnosing autoimmune diseases.
