1-Ethyl-2-methylindole is a synthetic compound that is used as an additive in the production of 1,4-dichlorobenzene. It reacts with chlorides to produce chlorinated products. The vitamin B12 mediated reaction of 1-ethyl-2-methylindole with solvents and catalysts produces carbonylation products. This reaction is catalyzed by acidity and can be facilitated by additives such as ferrous sulfate or zinc chloride. Electrolysis reactions for the synthesis of 1-ethyl-2-methylindole are also possible. Mechanistic studies have shown that this reaction occurs via a transfer process involving the intermediacy of a model complex, which is a transient intermediate in the formation of 1,4 dichlorobenzene from 1,2 dichlorobenzene and ethyl nitrite.
