2-Ethylpropane-1,3-diol is a chromobacterium extract that is hydrogenated and acetylated. It is a natural product that can be synthesized in the laboratory by chemoenzymatic desymmetrization of 2-(2-Propenyl) propane-1,3-diol. 2-Ethylpropane-1,3-diol has been shown to have antibacterial activity against corynebacterium and other bacteria. It also has the ability to react with triphenylphosphonium salts to form a coating for use as an additive in coatings or as a pharmaceutical excipient.
