Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione that inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-1β, by binding to PPARγ. Pioglitazone also has antimicrobial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) of pioglitazone has been shown to be higher than that of other drugs and its stability in aqueous solution is better than that of other drugs. Pioglitazone can inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by inhibiting the synthesis of RNA and DNA, which are essential for bacterial replication.
