(+)-Epicatechin is a flavonoid compound that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in vivo. (+)-Epicatechin inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and IL-6, by blocking the activation of NFκB. In vitro studies show that (+)-epicatechin has antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species and inhibit lipid peroxidation. The structural analysis of (+)-epicatechin has revealed two chiral centers. (+)-Epicatechin is active as a monomer and also can form dimers or higher oligomers with other molecules. The biological properties of these complexes are not well understood but there is evidence that they are potent antioxidants. In addition, (+)-epicatechin has been shown to have anti-atherosclerotic effects in vitro and in vivo models.
