Product Information

Name:
Ethyl-3-iodopropionate
Synonyms:
  • Propanoic Acid, 3-Iodo-, Ethyl Ester
Description:

Ethyl-3-iodopropionate is an organometallic compound with the chemical formula C5H7I. It is a potent and selective antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, which binds to the glycine site on the NMDA receptor complex. This inhibition prevents activation of the receptor by glutamate and other excitatory neurotransmitters and leads to neuroprotection against excitotoxicity. Ethyl-3-iodopropionate also has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, which is responsible for breaking down acetylcholine in the synapse. The glyceric acid group in ethyl-3-iodopropionate is stereoselective in its binding to receptors on neurons.
