Description:
6-Ethyl-5-iodopyriMidine-2,4-diaMine is a structural analog of pyrimethamine. It has been shown to be an antimalarial drug that acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), which is required for the synthesis of tetrahydrofolate. This drug also inhibits the activity of other enzymes in the folate pathway, such as thymidylate synthase and glycinamide ribonucleotide formyltransferase. 6-Ethyl-5-iodopyriMidine-2,4-diaMine has been shown to inhibit DNA synthesis in human erythrocytes and to inhibit bacterial growth when used at high doses.
