Ethyl tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-carboxylate is an organic compound that is synthesized by the grignard reaction. It is used as a dehydrating agent to convert alcohols into alkyl halides. This conversion can be catalytic or non-catalytic and involves the use of borohydride, sodium borohydride, or lithium aluminum hydride. The dehydrated product can then be demethylated with hydrochloric acid to produce the desired alcohol. Analogues of ethyl tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-carboxylate include ethyl 2H pyran-4 carboxylate, ethyl 3H pyran-4 carboxylate, and ethyl 4H pyran-4 carboxylate.
