Description:

P,P'-1,2-Ethanediylbis-Phosphonous (PEBP) is a chlorinated phosphine that is synthesized by the reaction of ethane with Pd(II) chloride complexes. PEBP has been shown to have antitumour activity against human ovarian carcinoma cells and may be a potential chemotherapeutic agent. The synthetic pathway of PEBP includes palladium catalyzed reactions, coordination chemistry and diphosphine ligands. PEBP is synthesized from ethane in two steps: first it undergoes chlorination by reacting with PdCl(CHCl) to form the chloroethanes (PEBE), which are then reacted with PdCl(CHCl). The reaction product is then hydrolyzed to yield PEBP.
PEBP can bind to Pt(II) complexes and inhibit the growth of cancer cells by inhibiting cell division and inducing apoptosis.
