- Pentane, 3-ethyl-
3-Ethylpentane is a hydrocarbon that has been shown to be a potential iron catalyst. It can be synthesized by the reaction of ethyl formate and methylcyclopentane in the presence of an iron catalyst. The molecule has 35 molecular descriptors, including molecular weight, number of atoms, and hydrogen bond donor/acceptor count. 3-Ethylpentane also contains three isomers: 2-ethylhexane, 3-ethylhexane, and 4-ethylhexane. The major isomer is 2-ethylhexane with a boiling point of 125 degrees Celsius at atmospheric pressure. 3-Ethylpentane is soluble in carbon tetrachloride but not in ethyl formate or ethanol. Molecular modeling simulations have shown that the molecule has a high vibrational frequency and reacts quickly with ethyl formate or carbon tetrachloride molecules.
