Ethyl 2-cyanobutanoate, also known as ethyl butanoate, is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of indole alkaloids. It is synthesized by the condensation of ethyl butyrate and ammonia. The cyano group in this molecule has a nucleophilic character due to its electron withdrawing effect on the adjacent carbon atom. This makes it possible for this molecule to react with various electrophiles including nitro groups and reactive halogens such as chlorine to form alkylating agents. Ethyl 2-cyanobutanoate can be found in the biochemical abnormalities of patients suffering from alkylating agent exposure or side-chain cleavage deficiency.
