Ergonovine maleate is a synthetic ergot alkaloid that is used as the maleate salt. It is an effective vasoconstrictor and has been shown to be useful in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. Ergonovine maleate has also been shown to cause significant decreases in blood pressure, particularly diastolic pressure, when administered intravenously. This drug has been shown to be helpful in treating angina pectoris by constricting the coronary arteries and reducing myocardial oxygen demand. Ergonovine maleate works by blocking the enzyme system involved in the breakdown of arginine, which leads to increased levels of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide causes vasodilation and prevents platelet aggregation, leading to decreased blood pressure.
