(E)-Ethyl 3-ethoxyacrylate is a reactive electrophile, which can be used to synthesize a variety of organic compounds. It is the ethyl ester of acrylic acid and has been shown to react with azides, halides, and other electrophiles. For example, (E)-ethyl 3-ethoxyacrylate reacts with ethidium bromide to yield an iminium cation and an azo compound. The reaction mechanism for this reaction proceeds as follows:
(E)-Ethyl 3-ethoxyacrylate + Ethidium bromide → (E)-Ethyl 3-ethoxyacrylate cation + Azo compound
The product distribution depends on the pH of the solution. At low pH, the product is the iminium cation; at high pH, it is the azo compound.
