Description:

Ethyl 2-[[2-Methyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]amino]pyridine-3-carboxylate (ETAC) is a synthetic catalyst for the transfer of benzenesulfonic acid groups to organic substrates. It is useful in the industrial production of acrylonitrile and ethylene, as well as advantageous for copper oxide catalysts. ETAC can be prepared by recrystallizing copper oxide with ethyl acetate followed by filtration and drying with isopropanol. The reaction time can be shortened by using a microwave oven. ETAC is manufactured industrially, but it can also be synthesized in a laboratory setting. It is synthesized by reacting hydrochloric acid with 2-methylbenzeneethanamine, followed by addition of sodium nitrite to form an intermediate that can then undergo decarboxylation to produce ETAC.
