Ethylmagnesium chloride is used to synthesize chiral compounds in an asymmetric synthesis. It is a model system for methyl ethyl ketones. Ethylmagnesium chloride is also used as a reagent in analytical methods such as the chemical stability test and fluorescence detector, which are used to determine the purity of organic compounds. The reaction mechanism of ethylmagnesium chloride is not well understood, but it appears that steric interactions and fluorescence spectrometry may be involved in this process. This reagent is a good candidate for use in glycol ether synthesis reactions because it has a hydroxyl group and sulfoxides.
