Elaiophylin is a potent antitumor agent with an elaiophylin-binding site. It has been shown to have potent antitumor activity in a model system and to inhibit the growth of tumor cells in vitro and in vivo, by binding to the receptor. Elaiophylin binds to wild-type and mutant cells at identical concentrations, but only the wild-type cells are inhibited by this binding. This inhibition leads to apoptosis in the wild-type cells, but not in the mutant cells. Elaiophylin also inhibits cellular proliferation through transcriptional regulation by inhibiting DNA synthesis. The chemical structure of elaiophylin is similar to that of epidermal growth factor (EGF).
