Ethyl 2-methylindole-3-carboxylate is a multisubstituted indole that is produced by the catalyzed reaction of ethyl acetoacetate and potassium carbonate. This compound contains two methyl groups, one carboxyl group, and one carboxylic acid group. Ethyl 2-methylindole-3-carboxylate is obtained by heating the corresponding ketone in a sealed tube with potassium carbonate, producing the desired product as a white solid. The yield of this reaction is about 82%.
