Epibadidine is a quinolone derivative that is used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. It has been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX). The drug also has anti-inflammatory activity in mice with adjuvant-induced arthritis. Epibadidine inhibits the production of acetylcholine, which may be due to its ability to inhibit nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and block postsynaptic cholinergic transmission at neuromuscular junctions. Epibadidine also blocks the binding of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in geniculate nuclei. This action prevents neurotransmitter release from nerve endings, blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain and reducing inflammation in joints.
