Desonide sodium phosphate is a pegylated amphipathic drug that has been derivatized with aminopropyl groups to improve its solubility. The use of desonide sodium phosphate for the treatment of inflammatory diseases is based on the ability of this drug to penetrate tissues and interact with cells. The particle size of desonide sodium phosphate has been shown to be important for its activity as a topical anti-inflammatory agent. Desonide sodium phosphate is also able to bind to proteins in skin tissue, which may explain some of its chronic treatment effects. Desonide sodium phosphate binds to the glucocorticoid receptor and the mineralocorticoid receptor, which are involved in regulating inflammation, immunity, and electrolyte balance in humans.
