2-Ethylhexanoyl chloride is a chemical that inhibits the activity of tyrosinase, which is an enzyme that is responsible for the production of melanin. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of tyrosinase in biodiesel production and can be used as a polymerization initiator. 2-Ethylhexanoyl chloride is synthesized by reacting ethyl acetate with chloroform in the presence of a base. This reaction produces 2-ethylhexanol and acetic acid. The synthesis can also be performed using other chlorocarbons such as 1,2-dichloroethane or 1,1,2-trichloroethane instead of chloroform. 2-Ethylhexanoyl chloride inhibits the activity of tyrosinase by reacting with the amino acid phenol group found in tyrosine molecules.
