4-Ethylpyridine is a cross-linking agent that can be used to form covalent bonds between proteins. It has been shown to induce necrotic cell death in cancer cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species by blocking the activation of Nrf2. 4-Ethylpyridine also inhibits the reaction products that catalyze the formation of cross-links between protein molecules, inhibiting cellular growth and inducing apoptosis. This compound is an acidic chemical that can react with hydrochloric acid to form carbon disulphide, which can act as a template molecule for DNA synthesis. Chromatographic methods are used to separate 4-ethylpyridine from other substances and identify it chemically.
