Ethyl 2-acetylbenzoate is an optically active compound that is synthesized by the reaction of o-toluic acid with benzaldehyde. It can also be obtained from the microbial synthesis of sinensis. The compound is used as a reagent in asymmetric syntheses and it can be used to produce other optically active compounds such as racemic mixtures, enantiomeric mixtures, and pure enantiomers.
The compound has been used to produce a number of biologically active compounds including anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, and anti-cancer drugs.
