Ethyl hydrogen suberate (EHSA) is a fatty acid with a hydroxymethyl group. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of histone deacetylase, an enzyme that removes acetyl groups from histones, which are proteins that package DNA into chromatin. EHSA also inhibits the production of peroxides and polyunsaturated fatty acids in cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit hydroxylases and monooxygenases. EHSA can be used as an organic solvent for magnetic resonance spectroscopy because it has a high boiling point and low viscosity.
