Ethyl 2-thiouracil-5-carboxylate is a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth. Ethyl 2-thiouracil-5-carboxylate has been shown to have strong antibacterial activity against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria. It binds to the metal hydroxides in the bacterial cell wall and causes DNA damage, inhibiting bacterial growth. This compound also has anticancer properties, as it inhibits breast cancer cells. The mechanism of action is not fully understood but may be due to the ability to inhibit protein synthesis in cancer cells.
