Description:

Galanthamine is a chiral drug and the racemic mixture of two enantiomers. The synthesis of galanthamine is based on the chemoenzymatic reaction between bromonium ions and acetylcholine. Galanthamine is used as an anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, where it inhibits the breakdown of acetylcholine by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and thereby increases its concentration in the brain. Galanthamine has also been shown to be effective against Parkinson’s disease, motor neuron disease, and other neurological disorders. Galanthamine has been found to be more potent than donepezil (a drug that is used for Alzheimer's disease), with fewer side effects.
