4-Epianhydrochlortetracycline hydrochloride (4EA) is a chemical compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by impacting on several processes, including carbon nanotube synthesis, DNA and RNA synthesis, protein synthesis, and cell division. 4EA was found to be effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is also an antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity against both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. The mechanism of action for 4EA is not well understood but it may inhibit energy metabolism in bacterial cells or interfere with DNA replication. Fluorescent compounds were used to study its effects on the bacteria Escherichia coli. 4EA can also be used as a model compound for other antibiotics.
