Ethyl 4-oxocyclohexanecarboxylate is a compound with a carbonyl group and a cyclohexane ring. It is an isomeric mixture of two compounds: ethyl formate and malic acid. The compound has been shown to have growth factor activity, inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. It may also act as an amp-activated protein kinase inhibitor. Ethyl 4-oxocyclohexanecarboxylate can be synthesized by reacting hydrogen fluoride with phosphorus pentachloride in the presence of difluoroethane to produce ethyl formate, which reacts with epidermal growth factor to produce this product.
