Ethyl cyanoethylphenylacetate is an organophosphorus compound that is used as a solvent. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as alcohols, ethers, and esters. Ethyl cyanoethylphenylacetate has been shown to react with sodium carbonate or diethyl carbonate to form the corresponding sodium or diethyl ester. This reaction can be used for the preparation of hexamidine and phenobarbital, which are important drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis and epilepsy. The scheme shown below illustrates the synthesis of hexamidine from ethyl cyanoethylphenylacetate:
Ethyl cyanoethylphenylacetate + NaHCO3 → NaC6H5OC(O)CH2CH2OC(O)CH2COONa + H2O
NaC6H5OC(O)CH2CH2OC(O)CH
