Ethyl dimethylphenylacetate is an ester compound that is used as a pharmaceutical preparation, primarily as an antihistaminic. It is also a component of antibiotic combinations and has been used in experimental models to study the effects of drugs on pancreatic lipase. This drug prevents the breakdown of fats by inhibiting the enzyme pancreatic lipase, which hydrolyzes fatty acids at the end of a long-chain fatty acid molecule. The inhibition of this enzyme leads to increased fat absorption from food and an increase in lipid levels in blood plasma. In addition, this drug inhibits histamine release from mast cells and may be effective against certain infections such as tuberculosis. Ethyl dimethylphenylacetate is chemically related to Dimethylphenylacetic acid and can be synthesized by reacting sodium carbonate with fatty acids and carbonyl reduction.
