7-Ethyl theophylline is a prodrug of theophylline, which is a drug used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is typically administered by slow-release tablets or capsules. 7-Ethyl theophylline is not active in the body on its own, but must be metabolized to theophylline, its active form, by cytochrome P450 enzymes. This drug has been shown to increase cortisol concentrations in urine samples and elute from acidic phosphate matrices at a pH of 4. The synthesis of 7-ethyltheophylline begins with reaction of ethylbenzene with acetaldehyde and sodium hydroxide to produce ethyl acetoacetate. This product is then reacted with carbon dioxide to produce 7-ethyl theophylline.
