Etomoxir is a drug that has been shown to have inhibitory properties in a number of different systems, including the inhibition of fatty acid oxidation in the mitochondria. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit certain signal pathways involved in cell proliferation and migration. Etomoxir has been used as a model system for breast cancer and also as a radioprotective agent. Etomoxir is also an inhibitor of mitochondrial membrane potential, which may be related to its anticancer activity. This drug has also been shown to have synergistic effects with radiation therapy in human breast cancer cells grown in culture.
