- ethyl 1H-imidazole-2-carboxylate
Ethyl imidazole-4-carboxylate is a synthetic compound that has been shown to have in vitro cytotoxic activity against various cancer cell lines. It is an ethyl ester of 4-hydroxyimidazole with an alkylating group at the 4 position on the phenyl ring. This compound binds to DNA by reacting with the N7 nitrogen atom of guanine and forming a covalent bond. The resulting adduct is resistant to nucleases and can form crosslinks between DNA molecules, leading to cell death. Ethyl imidazole-4-carboxylate also reacts with other sites on DNA, such as the 5′ phosphate group of deoxyribose and the 3′ hydroxyl group of ribose, which lead to further cytotoxic effects.
