6-Ethoxynicotinic acid is a hydrophobic drug with an acidic character. It is structurally related to nicotinic acid and its analogs, which are used as drugs to treat dyslipidemia, but also has been found to be active against cancer cells. 6-Ethoxynicotinic acid has been shown to inhibit the enzyme anhydrase, which is involved in the conversion of anhydrous ammonia into water and ammonia gas. The binding of 6-ethoxynicotinic acid at the active site of anhydrase leads to a conformational change in the enzyme's active site that limits its ability to bind substrate molecules. This inhibits the conversion of ammonia into water and ammonia gas and reduces the production of hydrogen ions. The hydrogen ions react with carbon dioxide from air, forming carbonic acid.
6-Ethoxynicotinic acid binds weakly to carbon dioxide and pyridine-3-carboxylic acid (
