Ethyl benzimidate hydrochloride is a chemical compound that can be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other drugs. It is an ester of benzimidic acid and ethyl alcohol, with a nitro group on one side of the glycosidic bond. The asymmetric synthesis of ethyl benzimidate hydrochloride is accomplished by using a chiral auxiliary to produce a molecule with two stereogenic centers, one on each end of the molecule. This drug may be used for treating autoimmune diseases or skin cancer, or as a prophylactic agent against congestive heart failure. Ethyl benzimidate hydrochloride has been shown to bind to dopamine receptors and inhibit the binding of dopamine to its receptor, which may contribute to its therapeutic efficacy in congestive heart failure. Ethyl benzimidate hydrochloride also has shown anti-inflammatory properties due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
