Ethylphenidate is a drug that is used for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adults. It is a central nervous system stimulant that works by increasing levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Ethylphenidate has minimal toxicity and does not affect blood pressure or heart rate, making it an attractive alternative to other ADHD treatments. However, this drug may have significant interactions with other drugs, especially those that are also psychoactive or are metabolized through hepatic pathways. The effects of ethylphenidate on locomotor activity have been studied using a vitro method in mice. This study showed that ethylphenidate increased locomotor activity at low doses but decreased locomotor activity at high doses.
