Ethyl 2-(m-nitrobenzylidene)-acetoacetate is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of nitrendipine. It can be prepared by reacting acetoacetate with m-nitrobenzaldehyde in the presence of a catalytic amount of diisopropylammonium chloride. The reaction liquid is evaporated to give high purity product and then it is recrystallized from a suitable solvent. The yield of this reaction is about 60%. Ethyl 2-(m-nitrobenzylidene)-acetoacetate impurities include ethyl benzoate, ethyl 4-nitrobenzoate, ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, ethyl 3-hydroxy-4-nitrobenzoate, and ethyl 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate.
