Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid ferric sodium salt trihydrate (EDTA-FeNa3·6H2O) is a catalyst that is used in wastewater treatment and nutrient solution. It can also be used as an antimicrobial agent in experimental models. EDTA-FeNa3·6H2O has been shown to catalyze the oxidation of organic matter in wastewater, which can be attributed to its ability to form acid complexes with hydrogen ions. The transfer reactions of EDTA-FeNa3·6H2O are mainly facilitated by water molecules, which are involved in hydrogen bonding interactions with the metal ion. The coordination geometry of EDTA-FeNa3·6H2O has been determined experimentally to be octahedral with six equatorial positions around the central Fe ion and three axial positions on the Na ion.
