Ethyl 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)acrylate is a molecule that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activities. It blocks the enzyme activity of cyclooxygenase, and also inhibits the enzyme activities of 5-lipoxygenase and 12-lipoxygenase. This compound has been shown to have a beneficial effect on locomotor activity in mice. Subcritical water extraction was used to isolate this molecule from plants with antiinflammatory properties. The molecular weight of ethyl 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)acrylate is 184.3 g/mol, which corresponds to an empirical formula of C14H14O3. This compound can be prepared by reacting ethylene diamine with acrolein monomethyl ether in the presence of cationic surfactants such as tetrabutylammonium bromide or benzalkonium chloride.
