Ethyl piperidine-2-carboxylate is a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. It is used for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy as well as other conditions that are alleviated by acetylcholinesterase inhibition. The reaction of ethyl piperidine-2-carboxylate with hydrogen fluoride produces nitrogen gas, which can be detected using a biological sample, such as the brain. Ethyl piperidine-2-carboxylate inhibits glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3), an enzyme that phosphorylates and inactivates glycogen synthase, which reduces glucose production in the liver.
