Ethyl trifluoroacetate (ETFA) is a fluoroacetic acid ester that is used as an industrial solvent. It has a hydroxyl group, which has been shown to react with kidney bean proteins in the presence of hydrogen fluoride. ETFA reacts with phosphorus pentoxide to produce ethyl trifluoroacetate monoethyl ether and hydrogen fluoride. The coordination geometry of the nitrogen atoms in ETFA has been found to be tetrahedral, and the conformational properties are gauche-like. In addition, ETFA can be synthesized by reacting ethyl alcohol with trifluoroacetic acid. The kinetic data for this reaction have been measured using kinetics experiments and show that the reaction mechanism is first order in both reactants.
