Ethyl 4-chloro-4-oxobutyrate (ECOB) is a pyrrole system that has been found to be effective in the treatment of bacterial, viral and fungal infections. The ionotropic gelation property of ECOB has been shown to be due to the matrix effect, which is a result of the chemical stability of ECOB and its high affinity for surfaces. ECOB has also been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Erythromycin-resistant strains of bacteria. ECOB binds covalently with hydroxyl groups on the surface and creates stable complexes. These complexes are stable in human serum and are not affected by monoclonal antibodies, which may be due to their non-covalent binding properties.
