The reaction of 1-ethyl-4-ethynylbenzene with sodium borohydride in methanol at room temperature for 10 minutes provides a facile and efficient method for the reduction of amines to their corresponding alcohols. This reaction is catalyzed by copper salt, which reduces the need for an expensive reducing agent such as lithium aluminum hydride. The reaction is stereospecific and does not affect the configuration of the double bond. Reduction of β-unsaturated aldehydes to alcohols can also be accomplished with this method.
